Passengers won't be able to board an Elizabeth line train until May - but eagle-eyed trainspotters may have caught a glimpse of one as it travelled through east London.

The first train that will be used for passengers made an overnight journey from Wembley to Ilford, taking in part of the Liverpool Street to Shenfield route that it will be travelling on when it comes into operation.

It will undergo further testing and driver training before carrying its first customers on the TfL Rail route later this year.

A Transport for London spokesman explained: “The first train is seven-carriages long but all trains will eventually be nine-carriages long when all platforms have been extended.”

The Elizabeth line will be fully operational in December 2018 when the central stations and tunnels under London open.
