Transport for London has unveiled a glimpse of the future by releasing a photograph of the first prototype Crossrail carriage.
This will be operating in Newham from 2017, so expect to see plenty more of these carriages in the not too distant future.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said: “The first test train carriage to roll off the assembly line in Derby is a fantastic visual reminder of how close we are to seeing a new railway line up and running in the Capital.”
When full Crossrail services begin in 2019, 66 trains, each the length of two premier league football pitches, will carry 1,500 commuters at a time.
Once the line is running, 42km of tunnels will allow residents of Newham to travel from Stratford, Maryland, Forest Gate, Manor Park and Custom House all the way to Heathrow in the south and Reading in the west without having to change trains.
