Fireworks will light up the skies of east London this weekend with an array of Bonfire Night events.

Newham Council will host its free annual display at Wanstead Flats, Forest Gate, on Saturday, which draws huge crowds to the Epping Forest park every year.

Heart Radio DJ Roberto will host the night, with famous movie soundtracks accompanying the fireworks that start at 7.30pm. Entry is from 5.30pm.

Entrances are on Centre Road and Dames Road, with no access from Lake House Road.

The weather-dependant event has been cancelled twice in the past five years due to bad weather conditions.

Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, said: “We know the nights are drawing in but that’s no reason to batten down the hatches and hide indoors. I want Newham residents to get the best of what we can offer in the way of free events and Guy Fawkes night is one of the best ways for people to get out and enjoy the fireworks and get to know their neighbours.

“This year’s display will be the biggest free fireworks event we have ever run so I hope everyone will come and enjoy the fun.”

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park’s viewing tower ArcelorMittal Orbit will also remain open late on Saturday for paying visitors to take a look at London’s lit-up landscape.

Open from 6pm to 9pm, visitors will be able to see the sunset from 80 metres up before fireworks light up the entire city – including nearby displays from Wanstead Flats and Hackney’s Clissold Park.

Tickets are available from £10 at arcelormittalorbit.com/whats-on/fireworks-night/. They include entry to the Orbit’s 178-metre slide which will stay open until 9pm.
