Today is the last chance to have your say on changes to the fire service that could see two of Newham’s engines scrapped.

A final public consultation meeting on operational changes to the London Fire Brigade will take place at the Old Town Hall, Stratford, from 7pm.

More than £11.5m in savings need to be made across the service. Two options are on the table including alternative crewing at stations or the permanent removal of 13 fire engines London-wide.

If chosen, the latter proposal would see Plaistow and Stratford fire stations lose a pump. Fire commissioner Ron Dobson has said he thinks this would be better than taking the alternate crewing option.

The Recorder spoke with Mr Dobson in December, a month after terrorists killed 130 people in Paris.

He said: “My worry with alternate crewing is that the crews that I would like to provide our response [to a Paris-style attack] would be from fire rescue units and if they were alternate crewed then, potentially, if the pump attached to the station has been mobilised first then we wouldn’t be able to send the specialist crew to attend until the other engine comes back.”

The final deadline for the consultation is 5pm on Monday, February 1. You can take part online by clicking here.
