Firefighters are continuing to damp down pockets of fire at a recycling warehouse in Canning Town.

Crews, who expect to remain at the scene for the rest of the day, want to ensure that the 400 tonnes of pre-recycled waste that caught alight at a warehouse in Scarab Close, near Lower Lea Crossing, in the early hours of this morning is completely extinguished.

Six fire engines and 35 firefighters and officers are currently at the scene.

Road closures are currently in place in the vicinity of Sacrab Close and Dock Road as smoke continues to rise from the wreckage.

About 70 firefighters and ten fire engines battled for almost nine hours to tackle the fire, which broke out shortly before 12.30am.

Residents in east London were warned to keep doors shut as large plumes of smoke drifted from the scene.

Station Manager Paul McClenaghan, who was at the scene, said: “An eight metre stack of about 400 tonnes of domestic recycling materials was affected by the blaze.

“Crews worked hard to bring the blaze under control and to stop it from spreading to neighbouring buildings on the industrial estate.”

Contingency fire crews were drafted in to take over from London Fire Brigade firefighters between 6am and 8am during strike action.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
