The blaze broke out in a third floor flat in Stratford Road at around 11.45am.

Around 25 firefighters from Plaistow, Stratford, East Ham and Poplar stations are on the scene.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage, but it is believed to be contained to just one flat.

A man and a woman escaped from the affected flat. They were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital as a precaution.

A further two adults and six children left neighbouring flats before the arrival of the fire crews.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said: “I just left my flat to go to the shop and saw all the fire engines outside.

“It looks like it was lucky that only one flat was affected.”
