One of Poplar’s screen legends is returning to the area where she grew up for a celebration of her career.
Dame Angela Lansbury, best known as star of Murder, She Wrote, will appear at a two-day film festival in her honour next month.
She will introduce a free screening of Bedknobs and Broomsticks in Chrisp Street Market on April 6, which will followed by a showing of family favourite Nanny McPhee.
Four of the film star’s movies will be shown at Spotlight, outside Langdon Park DLR, the previous day.
Other highlights of the Angela Lansbury Film Festival include an hour-long interview with the star by Sir Christopher Frayling, former Chairman of the Arts Council and Governor of the BFI, which is set to be screened at Spotlight on the Sunday afternoon.
Dame Angela has won six Golden Globes and five Tony awards during her illustrious career. She also notched up 12 consecutive Emmy Awards nominations for Murder, She Wrote - one for each of the seasons.
She returned to the East End in 2011 to unveil a plaque commemorating her grandfather, the rebel Mayor of Poplar who went to prison in the 1920s on a principle of protecting the poor against inequitable rates.
The Angela Lansbury film festival has been organised by Poplar Film in association with Poplar HARCA.
