Recycled water is now being used to clean trains running on the Fenchurch Street network through east London.
The washing facility at East Ham rail depot has been converted to collect the water used to clean each train, filter it and return it to the pumps to help wash the next train.
“We wanted to make sure we’re doing our bit for the environment,” explained c2c’s Julian Drury. “So we’ve invested in equipment to recycle more water and cut unnecessary waste.”
The recycling scheme is reducing water consumption at the depot by 60 per cent. The company has also introduced new cleaning products to brighten the white livery paintwork on the carriages.
