View from the council: Residents at heart of Carpenters plans

Residents living on the Carpenters Estate have been left in a state of limbo, unsure of what the future holds for their tight-knit community, as they have faced various redevelopment proposals over the years.

It’s not right that the community has been left facing so much uncertainty and that has been the reality of so many residents living there.

Since my election I have spent time visiting the estate and meeting with residents who live there. Most recently I met residents the other weekend ahead of the publication of a cabinet report recommending ending the joint venture process.

I asked them to put aside the false promises of the past and to work in partnership with me to make a fresh start. I apologised for the years of uncertainty and pledged we would work together for them to produce a genuinely resident-led masterplan which would deliver a minimum of 50 per cent genuinely affordable homes.

We all want the estate to be a great neighbourhood to live in a thriving and connected community and a place that is safe and pleasant where our residents can afford to live. But we cannot ignore the fact that Newham is facing a housing crisis and I want the 28,000 people on the housing waiting list to have a place they can call home.

Going forward, I intend for future proposals for the Carpenters Estate to be a beacon of good practice which could be replicated across London, where residents and the council will work together to build a high quality sustainable neighbourhood.

All proposals will be in line with the Mayor of London’s guidance for estate regeneration and will include a resident ballot.

As the council, we need to be in the driving seat so we are using our important land assets to build the communities and deliver the much needed homes at social rent levels required for our residents.

From now on, residents will be at the heart of the decisions that are taken about the future of the Carpenters Estate every step of the way.
