On behalf of everyone at Newham Council I would like to wish you all a happy New Year.

The past 12 months have been exciting and challenging, and I expect the same in 2016.

In 2015 we had the opportunity to go back to a transformed Olympic Stadium. The Rugby World Cup, international rugby league, Race of Champions, Diamond League athletics and the Great Newham London Run again showed our credentials of being able to host events of global stature.

This year West Ham United move in and we will ensure as many residents as possible see the Hammers in action for free.

In April we began celebrating Newham’s 50th anniversary year. It was great to see so many residents taking part in the birthday parties that took place in each of our Community Neighbourhood areas.

But 2015 had tremendous challenges in the face of deep cuts in our funding from the government. As we enter 2016 we face our biggest budget challenge ever as we consider how we protect the services residents value while making savings of £50 million. You have told us what matters most to you and we will do all we can to ensure we deliver the services you want.

We will also continue to ensure you have the same opportunities to enhance your lives as those in wealthier areas of London. Forty-one per cent of our households live in poverty and I remain committed to investing in the things that make the biggest long term difference to peoples lives.

This year I also want us to build on the education successes of 2015 where we had improved attainment in A-levels, GCSEs and at key stages 1 and 2. I m confident our young people will continue to make huge achievements.

The first properties in our Red Door Ventures programme also launched in 2015, delivering private rented housing in the borough. There are plans for many more homes to be built in 2016 and I m sure it will go from strength to strength.

There are some tough challenges in 2016 but there is also much to look forward to. Have a happy new year.
