An exciting new musical comedy is coming to an East End arts centre as part of a festival of monologue plays.
Laundrette Superstar brings together stand-up, fashion, theatrical storytelling, video and synth-pop for a run at The Space, Westferry Road, Isle of Dogs.
The one-woman show tells the story of Fortuna, an aspiring pop superstar, who lives in her grandma’s basement (“It’s just temporary, yeah?”), whose talents and station in life are at odds with her bold musical ambition.
The performances follow a series of sell-out runs at the Tea House Theatre in Vauxhall, and the Camden Fringe Festival in August.
Fortuna Burke, 25, who wrote Laundrette Superstar last summer, says she shares the fictional Fortuna’s love of synth-pop music, but lacks her boundless self-belief.
She said: “She’s constantly telling people how incredible she is, whereas in fact, she lives in her grandma’s basement and is performing in a mortuary and in old folks’ homes.”
The show makes use of Burke’s love of fashion, with costumes by up-and-coming designer Magda Durka.
“It’s great to have the opportunity to bring the show to another part of London,” said Burke.
“We’ve performed at other venues in east London, at the Hackney Attic and the Theatre Royal Stratford East, Stratford, and find it’s a real hub of people who are really creative.
“There’s a lot of music and comedy in east London.”
The show is part of The One Festival 2014 at The Space, which runs from today (Wednesday) until Sunday, February 2, and is offering programmes of four shows for £12.
Burke added: “It’s really exciting, especially for people who don’t usually get to go to the theatre, as there is such a variety of shows on offer.”
Fortuna’s glitzy showbiz world of ad hoc performances in gift shops and working part-time in a back-street laundrette, plus hilarious songs – such as Hop Aboard My Synthesizer and Dreaming Dreamz – are likely to dazzle and thrill audiences.
Laundrette Superstar is on January 23, 26 and 31.
