It’s quite hard to believe the country will go to the polls today (Thurs) to vote in the general election.

But make no mistake, it is hugely important that as many of us take the opportunity to have our democratic vote as possible.

Doing nothing plays right into the hands of terrorists and is at the core of what they hope to achieve.

A month or so ago this election was widely considered to be a vote on allegiances to Brexit and the party you felt could best deliver a smooth transition away from the EU. It was May v Corbyn. But the heinous campaign of terror waged on Saturday night and terror attacks in Manchester and and London just weeks before have moved the goal posts.

Policing, counter terrorism and national secuirty have come to the fore more than ever before. The national security of the country is the prime responsibility of the government but elections should not be fought and won in relation to this alone.

When tensions and emotions are this high and off the cuff knee-jerk policy pledges are trotted out by various parties it’s hard to see the wood for the trees. When you make your decision you should of course consider the security of the nation and Brexit, but there is so much more to governing our country, whether it be housing policy, job creation, taxation, social care policy, the NHS, small businesses, transport and infrastructure and foreign policy.

Now more than ever it’s important we deliver a government capable of tackling the threat of terrorism but in doing so make our country more successful than ever before.
