About 1,000 children visited the market’s courtyard which was turned into a farmyard during Saturday’s free event, offering face painting, craft workshops and side stalls.

Michelle Fitzgibbons, the hall’s sales and marketing manager, said: “It went down a storm judging by the feedback that we have had from parents and the stallholders.”

Her unit was turned into fantasy fairyland by staff from Discover Children’s Story Centre in Stratford.

The animals were provided by Newham City Farm and the event was made possible thanks to a grant from Newham Council.
