A family had a narrow escape in east London when a tree came crashing down on their house during the night as storms buffeted the South East.

An emergency crew form Stratford fire-station was called at 2.30am to the house in Creedon Road, Canning Town.

The tree narrowly missed bedroom windows, causing only minor damage to the side of the property. No-one was hurt.

Part of a tree came down in a garden two miles away at Maiden Road in Stratford, but there was no damage to the house.

Most of east London escaped lightly from the storm, as fire services across the country were called out to more than 800 emergencies.
