Families from across Newham celebrated Eid last night with an evening of music and festivities organised by the traders at East Ham Market.

The market, in Myrtle Road, East Ham opened until 10pm to allow people of many faiths in the area to mark the end of Ramadan with the first Chaand Raat.

The fun kicked off at 3pm with a comedy show and included a DJ, face painting and a colourful performance by several members of Seg 87 Umbrellas who took part in the opening ceremony at last year’s Paralympic Games.

Families were invited to the free event which continued until 10pm with more than 80 shops staying open until late. It was the first time the market has staged such an event.
