Former NBA basketballer turned psychologist John Amaechi is giving a talk at the University of East London next week.
He will be inspiring attendees to think about the mental and physical benefits of sport in an evening of presentations and workshops.
The first Englishman to start a competitive game in the American league, John was awarded an honorary doctorate of arts from the university in 2011.
He said: “I look forward to speaking to UEL for only the second time since my honorary doctorate.
“I’ve always believed that even the most unlikely of people in the most improbable of circumstances can become extraordinary and I’m going to do what I can to inspire and unlock UEL’s talents and potential.”
After retiring from basketball at the age of 35, he set up a charitable sports and community centre in Manchester and now works with businesses and organisations to help them get the most out of their staff.
His varied career has also seen him involved with broadcasting, voluntary work, motivational speaking and writing.
The evening will take place on Thursday, June 12 at the university’s Stratford campus.
It will see John give a presentation followed by a question and answer session before two workshops by UEL sports fitness instructor Sarina Duggall and senior psychology lecturer Dr Christian Van Nieuwerburgh.
