WITH a mountain of gritting salt available at its depot in Folkestone Road, East Ham, as can be seen in our picture, Newham Council say they are "well prepared" to cope with the predicted snowfalls.
In fact depot staff have been gritting some streets off and on since November 15 when temperatures started to plummet.
A spokesman said: “We have tonnes of salt, as much as last year and we did not use all that up.”
And should they run out they can call of some of the 90,000 tonnes of gritting salt that is stockpiled in the new strategic reserves facility available to London boroughs which opened in Dagenham last week.
Despite the weather the council has not had to close any of its schools, though there is constant monitoring of any
changes to the weather.
