Employing illegal workers has landed a Beckton factory with a potential fine of up to £110,000.

Immigration officers, acting on intelligence, visited Europrint Finishers in Hornet Way last week to question individuals about their right to work in the UK.

Eleven Indian nationals were arrested, including two men aged 30 and 39 who were in breach of their visa conditions.

A further eight men, aged between 29 and 37, and a woman aged 32, were found to have overstayed their visas.

Five of the arrested were transferred to an immigration detention centre while the remainder were released on bail.

Unless the business can prove that the correct right-to-work checks were carried out, a penalty of up to £10,000 per illegal worker will be imposed.

Sue Blackwood, from the East London Home Office Immigration Enforcement team, said: “This was a large operation which resulted in a number of arrests.

“It is a stark warning to businesses which either deliberately employ people with no right to work or fail to carry out the legally required checks on their staff.

“We will catch up with you and you should expect to face heavy financial penalties.”
