Chobham Academy hosted a pre-election debate to give pupils a chance to hear the candidates’ views.

Representatives from the Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrat and Green Parties gathered in the Cheering Lane, Stratford school on Monday to answer questions from pupils, relayed to them by five pupils who hosted the event.

The topics discussed included local issues such as fly-tipping and affordable housing in Newham and national issues such as immigration, Brexit and policing.

Each candidate used this time to share their stances on various issues.

The candidates in attendance were Kirsty Finlayson, East Ham Conservative parliamentary candidate; Michael Spracklin, West Ham Green parliamentary candidate; Rachel Evans, parliamentary assistant to East Ham Labour candidate Stephen Timms; and Paul Reynolds, Liberal Democrat West Ham parliamentary candidate.

At the end of the debate, each candidate summed up their party’s stances, discussing everything from getting a Brexit deal to rejecting austerity and inequality.
