The sound of a ping pong ball bouncing back and forth could soon be heard in care homes and health centres across the borough.
Ping Pong Newham has been launched as part of a national campaign to encourage older and disabled people to stay active.
The Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, was joined by councillors and residents at the launch event at Little Ilford Youth Zone.
More than half of the 120 older and disabled people signed up, while 10 community groups registered interest in setting up ping pong and received a free starter pack.
Sir Robin said: “It is important that we keep our older and disabled people active and connected. “Playing the game can help with mobility issues by improving your balance.
“Even learning how to hold the bat steady can really improve people’s confidence. It’s never too late to start.
“Anyone can play and it’s a great way keep body and mind healthy, stay fit and make new friends.”
The campaign is run by Newham Council and the BRITDOC Foundation and comes off the back of a film about eight competitors in the over-80s World Table Tennis Championships.
