What music did you listen to at school? It probably wasn’t traditional Afghan music, which is what pupils at a Plaistow school enjoyed recently.

Lister Community School was treated to a performance from six students of the Afghanistan National Institute of Music, who also give tutorials on their instruments.

The group, which consists of two girls and four boys aged 11 to 17, have performed in a number of countries including South Korea and Germany, as well as in front of their president, Hamid Karzai.

The visit was a warm-up to their performance at the Southbank Centre’s Alchemy Festival this weekend.

The St Mary’s Road school’s director of community music, Amy Haynes, said that the pupils enjoyed hearing new music and treated their visitors to some beat boxing performances in return.
