The leader of one of the UK’s largest trade unions praised the work of support staff in a visit to a Newham secondary school.

Unison general secretary Dave Prentis met students and staff during his tour of Lister Community School by headteacher Anthony Wilson.

He also addressed and took questions from the St Mary’s Road, Plaistow school’s branch members.

“School support staff help children learn, keep them safe and healthy, and make sure schools run smoothly,” he said.

“We owe them so much.”

Mr Prentis’ visit on November 17 was to promote Stars In Our Schools, an annual event recognising the work of support staff.

The campaign thanks teaching assistants, librarians, caterers and others who make school “a safe and happy place for children to learn”, he added.

Mr Wilson called it “a pleasure” to show Mr Prentis around the school.
