The University of East London (UEL) has rebuked claims that it has received a £1 million emergency loan from the Office for Students.

A BBC article, published today, referred to an unnamed “small, modern institution” which had received a bailout from the higher education regulator in September after experiencing cash flow problems during the summer.

A UEL spokesman said: “This morning BBC London implied that the University of East London was possibly the higher education institution which has been bailed out by the Office for Students.

“We can confirm that this is completely untrue.

“We are registered with the OfS, and that means we have the financial resources to provide and deliver the courses we have advertised.

“The university also meets its requirements for course quality, academic standards, student support and student protection.”
