More than 3,000 Year Six pupils will be heading to their preferred secondary school in September.

The 73 per cent of children offered their first choice Newham school during Wednesday’s national offer day – 3,033 pupils – puts the borough above the London-wide average of 68pc.

The number of children set to attend one of the top three schools on their list – which could be as long as six - was 94pc, higher than the national average of 88pc.

This places Newham fourth out of the 33 London authorities in offering a place at a top three preference school, and seventh for first preference offers.

Cllr Quintin Peppiatt, cabinet member for children and young people, said: “Newham has one of the largest populations of young people compared to any of the other London boroughs so we have a large number of pupils applying for our schools. Despite this, we have continued to ensure that almost all get a place at the school of their choice.

“Our 11-year-olds are making the best progress in the country in terms of writing and are in the top ten nationally across a range of Government indicators that measure their performance during primary school. We want them to continue that success as they enter secondary school.

“That’s why we will continue to do all we can to meet the demand for school places by expanding our schools while at the same time resisting the Government’s proposed cuts to school budgets as part of the new national funding formula.”

Just 158 of the 4,173 pupils to apply were unable to be offered any of their preferred schools, and were allocated a place at the school nearest to their home that still had space.
