Dozens of schools are expected to be closed in Newham today as members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) go on strike across the country.

Kevin Courtney, Acting General Secretary for the NUT, said he anticipated strike support to be “strong” in the borough based on previous strike action.

He said: “I know that Newham is always one of our strong areas so I can expect a lot of school closures and a lot of support.”

The union boss said the borough was one of the country’s most at risk areas in terms of funding as a result of cuts and a “reduction in subjects” by central government.

Mr Courtney said members were striking today after negotiations had failed between them and government ministers.

He said: “I think it is really important that at this moment we are not cutting education and I think it is a mistake. I think it is important that someone is making the cause for education.”

Newham Council provided the following list of affected schools, but parents are advised to call ahead to make sure:
