Hundreds of youngsters have been sent home as 71 Newham schools are affected by today’s teachers’ strike - 26 of which are closed to all pupils and 45 that are partially disrupted but are admitting some youngsters.

Newham Council said 17 other schools are fully open. A spokesman added: “The council has worked with schools to minimise disruption and we would like to thank all the school staff who have helped to maintain a level of service.”

Schools across the county are hit of the one-day walkout by members of the National Union of Teachers and University and College Union against cuts and pensions.

Christine Blower, the NUT’s General Secretary, said: “Teachers cannot be expected to do anything other than defend the right to a pension which they have paid into in good faith,” while Schools Minister Nick Gibbs said: Strikes benefit no-one.”
