The Royal Docks Community School has officially become an academy.

The school, in Prince Regent Lane, joined the Burnt Mill Academy Trust (BMAT) on New Year’s Day.

The move had proved controversial, with teachers striking over the proposals last month.

The transition began last year, with John Blaney, a former headteacher at one of the trust’s other schools, Burnt Mill Academy in Harlow, becoming executive principal at Royal Docks.

Deputy headteacher Andrew Ross has taken up the role of head of school.

Helena Mills, CEO of BMAT, said: We are delighted to have been able to take Royal Docks Community School into our trust.

“We have already seen many good things at Royal Docks, which we are keen to preserve. We look forward to further developing Royal Docks to ensure all students can benefit from our experience.”
