Year six teacher Michael Patient, who works at Tollgate Primary School, was one of just 55 teachers across London to be recognised with a Pearson Teaching Award from more than 20,000 nominations.

Colleagues say that Michael has created a “buzzing, dynamic classroom environment” where there is “much joy, trust, high expectation and high pupil outcomes” and he is passionate about motivating children to stay in the education system, having left school early himself.

Michael initially started his career as a teaching assistant and enrolled on a graduate teacher programme whilst working as a learning mentor at his school to become a fully qualified teacher.

He will join his fellow silver award winners at the UK final of the teaching awards at London’s Guildhall in October, where ten winners will receive a gold award.
