More than 100 sixth form students celebrated their academic and personal achievements at an awards evening.

The students from Newham Sixth Form College, NewVIc, parents, staff and sponsors gathered at the college to recognise the students’ success and hard work over the last year.

They were welcomed on stage to receive their prize from one of the twenty-two sponsors including Barclays, University of the Arts London, University of East London, London City Airport, Queen Mary University of London, Canary Wharf Group, Tate & Lyle and Clarks Legal.

Award winners included those who have shown incredible commitment to their studies, excelling in extra-curricular activities, as well as overcoming barriers and difficult personal circumstances.

A-level student Rumana Ali received the English literature award, sponsored by Birkbeck, University of London, for her notable achievements including writing the best essay for AS English literature last year.

The night ended with recognition of sporting excellence at the college, in Prince Regent Lane, Plaistow which included the college receiving the British Colleges Sport (BCS) London College of the Year 2012-2013 certificate. Former level 3 BTEC sports student Toni Dunkley was one of the first NewVIc students to represent London in trampolining and was awarded most committed sportsperson of the year. Toni is now continuing to coach cheerleading in Newham schools.

Syed Shah and Sean Madigan received the Coach of the Year Award, sponsored by the University of East London.

Eddie Playfair, principal of the college, said: “The overwhelming feeling tonight is a feeling of pride. We are all so proud of those students who have gone above and beyond. Young people come to us with big dreams and leave us with even bigger dreams. Thank you to our sponsors who are demonstrating their commitment to developing young talent. Without them it would not be possible to celebrate the success of so many of our students.”
