The sprinter who took silver at last year’s London Games was at Vicarage Primary School in East Ham on Monday to open a sports hall, as part of a school refurbishment.

The event coincided with the school in Vicarage Lane holding a cultural dress or non-uniform day. Children performed dances and songs, and read poems from around the world as part of the event.

Tables selling everything from henna and scarves to jewellery and bric-a-brac were also put up.

Money raised from the event will go towards buying books for a new school library due to open in September.
