Churches across the borough have opened their doors to give primary school pupils an insight into the nativity story.

More than a third of Newham’s Year 1 pupils took part in the Christmas journey project, which was organised by charity Faith in Schools.

Five and six-year-olds from 23 schools visited Highway Vineyard Church in Stratford, Christ Church in Plaistow, All Saints’ Church in Forest Gate and St George’s Church in East Ham, where they travelled back in time to immerse themselves in the biblical tale.

The festive fun, which featured scenarios including Mary’s kitchen and the shepherds’ hillside, was enjoyed by children of all faiths.

Fathima Khatun, a teacher at Quwwat-ul-Islam Girls’ School, who were participating for the first time, said: “The children came back in high spirits and really enjoyed it.”
