Building works to improve facilities across many of the borough’s primary schools are nearing completion.

The renovations are part of a multi-million pound expansion programme to create an additional 10,000 primary school places to meet the rising demand.

Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, visited four schools to see how the works were progressing, including St Stephen’s School in East Ham where a two-storey block containing facilities including seven new classrooms is being built.

He also paid a visit to Upton Cross School in Plaistow, which has been expanded from a one-and-a-half form entry located on one site to a five form entry across two sites.

North Beckton Primary and Roman Road in East Ham also received visits.

Sir Robin said: “Once the building works are complete it will enable us to continue to meet the growing demand for primary school places ensuring every Newham child can attend one of our outstanding schools.”

Work is also underway in Kensington, Earlham, Woodgrange, Hartley, Central Park, and Portway Primary Schools as well as Godwin Junior School.
