Four young mathematicians have proved they are among the capital’s brightest brains after coming second in the UK Mathematics Trust’s regional maths challenge competition.
The students from Stratford School Academy joined their counterparts from 25 other east London schools for the team maths challenge.
Year 9 students Abdullah Amla and Abdulawwal Ahmed joined Year 8s Zulfar Khunjumon and Syed Ahmed in taking on several rounds against the clock.
These included a cross number challenge – a crossword but with numerical answers – and a relay race, with pairs taking it in turns to solve problems.
The competition is designed to encourage mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency in basic techniques.
As runners up, the team from the Upton Lane, Forest Gate, school will have to wait and see if they can join the regional winners at the national final, held at the Royal Horticultural Halls in June.
