Youngsters who took part in workshops with members of the London Symphony Orchestra have expressed an interest in learning to play musical instruments.

The children at Monega Primary School in Manor Park were lucky enough to work with members of the London Symphony Orchestra who held workshops for youngsters with special educational needs to enhance their music curriculum.

The visit to the school was part of a project called Trains, Planes and Automobiles. The London Symphony Orchestra have been doing this project with a few selected schools in east London. Monega is the only school to be selected in Newham. The project involves LSO musicians visiting a group in school three times to create their own piece of music, followed by group attendance at an LSO schools concert at the Barbican, where the orchestra will play music using the same ideas as the students’ own created piece.

After taking part in the workshops, the children, including Aizaaz Ahmed, Sadia Arif, Mohammed Tahmid Rahman, Ayashai Akthar, Mutasim Ali, Sayfur Rahman and Gurjeet Bhamra, performed what they had learnt to family and friends.

The sessions were led by SENCO teacher Daniel Cox with support from teaching assistants Joyce Frimpong, Dilwara Begum, Pat George, Raj Kaur and Baksho Kaur. Mr Cox said: “It was a very enjoyable event that has had the children wanting more. Some have since asked to continue to learn how to play an instrument.”
