A society for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students in Stratford celebrated its third anniversary by unveiling a poster of politician Harvey Milk.

The image of Mr Milk, who passed sweeping gay rights laws in San Francisco 40 years ago after becoming the first openly gay elected official in California, took pride of place in the London Academy of Excellence canteen at the unveiling on Monday.

The LGBT Network was set up to “celebrate the diversity of the students” and to make High Street, Stratford school “an inclusive place”, said deputy headteacher Ben Webster.

“The network are keen to point out that life at LAE isn’t just about exams and that there is a warm community, where everyone is valued for who they are,” he added.

“Last year the network worked closely with Stonewall to invite Sir Ian McKellen to give a lecture and seminar at the school.”
