The University of East London has overcome surrounding fog and congestion to become one of the greenest establishments in the country.

The university based in Stratford and the Docklands, has been awarded ISO14001 certification, an international standard environmental accolade which only a handful of universities nationwide have achieved.

To gain the award, UEL runs an environmental management system (EMS) which helps to identify and strategically minimise energy consumption and waste at every level.

Energy and emvironmental manager Sara Kassam said: “This has required a lot of hard work and cooperation from individuals and teams across UEL and has helped raise awareness about environmental issues.

“The independent verification of our EMS is an excellent way of demonstrating our commitment to environmental improvement.”
