Backers of the latest academy set to open in Newham have vowed to ensure children achieve through a “no excuses” principle.

The Newham Free Academy aims to take its first year intake of 180 pupils in September 2012 and hopes raising expectations will spur children to perform better.

The non-selective mixed school for 11 to 18 year olds is the third such institution to be set up in the borough - joining London Academy of Excellence and School21 - under Government-backed plans for teachers and parents to take greater responsibilities in running education facilities.

Education delivery partner Elias Achilleos said: “We strongly believe in a ‘no frills’ high quality traditional education centred around respect, care, family values and trust, available to all young people in Newham from whatever background, without restrictions on entry.

“It is a school for the community.”

The academy will specialise in humanities subjects, and allocate a significant number of pupils based on proximity. The remaining places will be chosen by a lottery system.

A site has not yet been decided, but the school is looking at facilities in Royal Albert Dock, Plaistow or Stratford. When full to capacity, the academy hopes to have capacity for around 1,200 pupils.
