A star pupil was awarded a free Kindle e-reader at a school assembly as part of a campaign to encourage children to read.

The event at Windsor Primary School in East Ham saw the Kindle handed to year 6 pupil Faith Falayi, who was chosen for her academic achievement.

The Kindle was donated by transfer company MoneyGram along with free stationary kits for the whole school.

MoneyGram is giving 5,000 stationary kits to schools in Newham and Hackney for it’s ‘Readers are Leaders’ campaign to boost early education at primary schools.

The assembly yesterday was attended by Cllr Joy Laguda of Plaistow ward and Cllr Ayesha Chowdhury of Beckton ward, and featured a speech by MoneyGram marketing executive Olu Oke on the importance of reading for a child’s future success.

Carol Farwell, head teacher of Windsor Primary School, said: “We were delighted that Afiah Kofie, who is a past pupil, recommended the school to be one of the ten schools across Newham and Hackney to receive stationary packs for each pupil and for one pupil to be awarded a Kindle.

“Faith is a very deserving winner as she is a good role model and thoroughly enjoys reading. Many thanks to MoneyGram for this gesture.”
