It will be a case of lights, camera, action for a sixth former who is setting off for a course at the British Film Institute.

Yohanna Duraiswamy, 17, from St Angela’s and St Bonaventure’s Year 13 Sixth Form, is one of just 18 young aspiring film makers who have been given the opportunity to develop their practical talent and work with film industry and education professionals.

The sixth former, who is studying Media, Psychology and Biology, will be tasked with producing a short film in the genre of Gothic Horror to coincide with the forthcoming BFI Gothic Season.

The extensive programme includes hands on film making workshops plus free access to screenings and events at the 57th BFI London Film Festival, the BFI Gothic Season, monthly future film events and the 7th BFI Future Film Festival.

Yohanna will also be actively involved in the exhibition and distribution of her own work and will ultimately gain a Silver Arts Award.

Lulu Lory, Yohanna’s media teacher, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Yohanna to learn from the very best in the film industry. She will have to show flair and dedication as the course will take place after school, at weekends and during half term. The experience will be priceless and I feel confident she will absorb all she sees and hears and produce a fantastic film.”
