Small screen star Billy Murray returned to Newham yesterday to officially open a new school play area.

The ex-EastEnders and The Bill actor, originally from Plaistow, was also at Stratford’s John F Kennedy School in Pitchford Street to launch its new wheelchair-accessible minibus.

The new 16-seat £48,000 vehicle will enable youngsters to get out and about during the Olympic Games this summer.

It was donated by charity The Lord’s Taverners.

The new outdoor play area, installed by Park Leisure, includes wheelchair roundabouts, swings and accessible climbing frames, tailored to meet the needs of the pupils, who have physical and learning disabilities.

Matthew Patten, chief executive of The Lord’s Taverners, said: “We believe that sport and recreation are essential for all young people, particularly those with special needs.

“The new playground and wheelchair accessible minibus will enable the JFK youngsters to explore new activities and enjoy new places and experiences.

“We are proud to support the staff, parents and young people of JFK School.”
