An education project that aims to give young people the support they need to get into university has been launched in the borough.
The project, called IntoUniversity, was launched at a new learning centre in East Ham by Nicola Brentnall, Director of the Queen’s Trust, which part-funds the centre.
She said: “The Queen’s Trust helps charities that help young people help others. We are delighted to support IntoUniversity to open new centres in more communities that need them. The staff and young volunteers at IU East Ham help children in Newham to improve their results at school and so achieve their real potential”.
Dr Rachel Carr, chief executive of IntoUniversity, said: “We provide students with long-term support which starts early, a combination which gives students the best possible chance of attaining a good university place.”
The centre at St George and St Ethelbert’s Church, in Burford Road is one of 11 across London and will provide hundreds of children in Newham with access to an innovative and award-winning programme of after-school academic support, mentoring and aspiration-raising programmes.
