This week in Press Gang, the Recorder finishes off the Black History Month celebrations with a special report from Jessica Benning, a Year Five pupil at Drew Primary School in Wythes Road, Silvertown.

“This Black History Month we have been learning about black historical figures.

“Year Six were learning about World War Two pilots, Year Five were learning about the Victorians, Year Four were studying Queen Nzinga Mbande, Year Three studied textiles of Ghana, Year Two learned about George Washinton Carver, Year One looked at how toys are made from recycling materials in Malawi and EYFS focused on Handa’s Surprise.

“I am in Year Five and we found out about the first black footballer, Arthur Wharton, and Sara Forbes Bonetta, Queen Victoria’s godchild.

“Everyone enjoyed the exhibition including parents, teachers and governors. Many people said: “I have enjoyed this, I hope Black History Month will be celebrated in the same way in 2013.”
