UEL lays on 150 staff at its Clearance call-centre to help A-level students

One of London’s biggest clearing centres for A-level pupils getting their results today is being run all day and tomorrow at the University of East London.
The centre at the university’s Royal Docks campus in Beckton has specialists on site to advise students who have come through clearing system to talk about their intentions.
UEL is one of the largest universities in London supporting students through the Clearing process, with one of the biggest call centres.
It has laid on a team of 150 academic and administrative staff at the centre in University Way, Beckton, to answer calls from 8am to 8pm both today and tomorrow.
A large proportion are from deprived communities, it points out.
“We champion widening participation from non-traditional and disadvantaged communities,” a UEL spokesman said. “We have a higher-than-average proportion of students with a minority ethnic demographic profile and recruit students we can support to success.”
Almost 70 per cent already studying at the university are from minority ethnic backgrounds. One-in-three students study part-time. A third are also aged 30 or more.
