Barts Health NHS Trust has been voted sustainability champion in awards that celebrated organisations and people that are pushing the boundaries of sustainable business.

The Trust was one of the big winners as global innovation and collaboration took centre stage at the 2degrees Champions Awards recently. The awards, which are entirely voted for by industry peers, saw Barts Health NHS Trust voted winner in two categories as well as runner-up and commended in three others, beating the likes of Coca Cola Great Britain.

Fiona Daly, Environmental Manager at Barts Health NHS Trust, said: “I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised as not only improving the efficiency of our services but also being successful in driving money saved directly back into patient care.

“These achievements are incredibly exciting and prove that sustainability has a rightful place in fulfilling NHS priorities of providing value-for-money and high-quality care.”

Among its awards, the Trust was voted winner of the ‘Water Management’ category after saving over 480 million litres of water, equivalent to every Londoner cutting their usage by 10 per cent.

The Trust also came first in ‘Energy & Carbon Management – Short-Term Payback’ for an efficiency-saving initiative that has seen it drive savings of £10,000 a month (around £600,000 over the next five years) and will save 892 hundreds of tonnes of CO2 each year. Using Certero’s PowerStudio®, applied to 5,500 PCs and laptops across the Trust’s six hospitals, the solution monitors usage patterns and determines when computers can be powered down. It has reduced the Trust’s high overnight power wastage of 85 pc and delivered potential energy savings that could actually recoup the cost of the solution within just four months.
