Staff and shoppers at a supermarket worked together to raise more than £3,000 for a charity that helps children across the borough enjoy a week of fun activities.
The collective efforts, which included bring and buy sales, collections and filling shoppers bags at the checkout, of Sainsbury in East Ham helped raise a total of £3,440 which was presented to SWAN Foundation charity for CCHF (All about Kids in Newham).
Doris Valencia-Gonzalez, commercial manager of the Myrtle Road supermarket, said they chose the charity because of its work with disadvantaged children from across the borough.
She said: “With this money they can give many underprivileged (and sometimes abused ) a respite for a week in one of their activity centres.
It gave us great satisfaction to be able to help these children and visit one of the centres in Hove where we could see what a great holiday they can have for a week and where they can forget their troubles and be kids by learning to cook, swim, bake and do crafts.”
The store has now pledged to support Richard House Childrens Hospice in Beckton for a year.
