An MP has won an award for his “outstanding contribution and support to the British curry industry” to Bangladeshi cuisine at a charity ceremony.
East Ham MP Stephen Timms received the award at the eighth annual Bangladesh Caterers Association event, which celebrated 53 years of Bangladeshi cuisine in the UK.
The event at the Park Plaza hotel, Westminister, was attended by MP Timms, the High Commissioner of Bangladesh, Mohamed Mijarul Quayes, and more then 1000 guests, who raised £2600 to support victims of April’s Rona Plaza disaster in Bangladesh where 1,130 people died.
Mr Timms said: “I am honoured to have been recognised in this manner by the Bangladeshi Caterers Association.
“The association plays an important role in celebrating the contribution of Bangladeshi restaurateurs in the UK and is inspiring a new generation of exciting young chefs.
“There is much to celebrate in this industry and I hope it will go from strength to strength as Bangladeshi cuisine grows in popularity.”
