Award-winning Elders project East Ham charity have been saved from closure by the Big Lottery Fund.
The Bonny Downs Community Association have received a grant of £399,938 to keep their programme of running activities and support services for locals over the age of 50.
Peter Laing, BDCA Chief Executive said: “BDCA are delighted that the Big Lottery Fund has helped secure the future of our Elders Project because we know how much our community needs and values this project.”
The project sees more than 400 elders attend with many of them saying that it is a ‘haven from loneliness’ and a ‘lifeline’.
Florence Appiah, project user, said: “I’m an old age pensioner, I live on my own and this club is my saviour, without it I would be stuck at home worrying about all my aches and pains and thinking I’m so lonely and have nowhere to go.”
