League One: Leyton Orient 2 Rochdale 3

Matt Done’s brace helped 10-man Rochdale come from behind to pick up a victory against Leyton Orient.

The defeat leaves the O’s still without a home win this season, and it was a less than ideal start to Kevin Nugent’s spell as caretaker manager as they lost for the second time against a side with 10 men in three weeks, following the 2-0 defeat here against Colchester United.

Done had fired the visitors into a fourth-minute lead before Ashley Eastham’s sending off. Chris Dagnall missed the subsequent penalty, but the O’s went in front at the break after goals from Jobi McAnuff and Romain Vincelot.

But Vincenti slotted home the equaliser before Done shot low past Woods to seal the win.

Caretaker boss Kevin Nugent made four changes to the side which lost 1-0 against Sheffield United on Tuesday in the Capital One Cup as skipper Nathan Clarke was dropped to the bench, while David Mooney, Jay Simpson and Michael Petrasso all came out for Shane Lowry, Dean Cox, Chris Dagnall and Darius Henderson.

But much like Tuesday’s game, the O’s started slow conceding a corner in the opening minute.

And though that came to nothing Keith Hill’s side went in front as Matthew Done had space from 30 yards out and he superbly fired low into the bottom corner past Gary Woods

It should have been doubled when a ball was threaded through to Ian Henderson who was one-on-one with Woods, however he nudged it just wide of the target.

But the O’s needed a response and they soon got that on 13 minutes when the ball fell kindly for McAnuff on the edge of the area and he half volleyed the effort past Conrad Logan for his second O’s goal.

The hosts worked their way back into the game well, but were dealt a blow when Lloyd James came off worst in a 50/50 challenge and Bradley Pritchard came on.

And the game soon turned in Orient’s favour when Henderson was through on goal and was clearly tugged back by Ashley Eastham.

It looked like the foul took place outside the box, but referee Darren Sheldrake pointed to the spot.

As the last man, Eastham was shown his marching orders by the referee, however Dagnall’s spot kick, just like at Wembley, was saved by Logan and Henderson fired the rebound wide.

The O’s were rightly on top now and they should have profited from a free-kick inside the box when Rhys Bennett’s back pass was picked up by a slipping Logan, however the hosts failed to profit.

But it wasn’t too long until the O’s were celebrating again when Henderson superbly headed into the path of Vincelot and he nodded it past Logan as the O’s ended the half in front.

Just when you thought they had turned the corner the hosts conceded three minutes into the half when Woods could only parry Jack O’Connell’s effort and Peter Vincenti thumped home the rebound.

It was another poor start from the hosts and that will certainly be an area they need to address.

Scott Cuthbert’s header forced Logan into another save before Henderson showed a nice touch to control a Cox ball in but he fired it just wide as the O’s continued to push forward.

Cox tried his luck from 25 yards and his shot was agonisingly wide of the target, but the O’s hopes were dealt a killer blow when the visitors edged in front midway through the second half.

Former Orient skipper Stephen Dawson was the provider as he found Done shot low across goal past Woods to silence the home fans.

Whatever the O’s tried they couldn’t find a way through as Lowry was denied his first goal for the club when Henderson cleared his header off the line from Cox’s corner.

And once again against 10 men the O’s were struggling to make the most of the numerical advantage, but skipper for the day Scott Cuthbert did head just wide as time ticked away.
