An investigation is under way into the cause of a fire which damaged a disused car garage in Canning Town in the early hours of this morning.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers were called to the building situated next to St Margarets Church in Barking Road at 2.25am. The blaze damaged half the building and the roof which firefighters had to remove to tackle it. Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers dealt with the blaze and brought it under control by 3.40am.

Most of the ground floor and half of the roof were damaged by fire which was brought under control by 3.40am. No-one was injured in the incident.

Fire engines from Plaistow, Poplar, Stratford and Millwall fire stations were at the scene. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
