Born in Brixton, south London, Bowie nonetheless had some East End connections. In fact the music superstar filmed videos for 80s singles Underground, from the soundtrack to the film Labyrinth in which he stars, and Mick Jagger duet Dancing in the Street in Newham.

After a rummage in the archives with the help of Newham Archive and Local Studies Library the Recorder found this call sheet showing Temple Mills Lane was the location of choice for Underground.

Taking its theme literally the video, directed by Steve Barron, features a band playing at an underground club.

Advice to performers? “We will be shooting in sub-zero temperatures so everyone should dress as warmly as possible.”

Interestingly the band featured one Richard Fairbrass on bass who later went on to find fame of his own with group Right Said Fred.
